A miya daiko drum, also known as a nagado-daiko or 'long-bodied drum' is a type of taiko drum primarily used in Japanese traditional festivals, Shinto shrines, and Buddhist temples. It is a central instrument in kumi-daiko ensembles and is known for its low, loud, and deep sound. The word 'miya' often refers to a Shinto shrine.

Traditional Use:
Miya daiko drums are traditionally associated with sato-kagura (village or folk Shinto music festivals) and are used in Buddhist temples to accompany scripture chanting and Buddhist o-bon festival dances.

Musical Role:
They are often played with the shime daiko (a smaller, higher-pitched drum) and are known as odaiko (big taiko). The miya daiko provides the low, powerful rhythmic foundation in these traditional settings.

Modern Applications:
While still used in traditional settings, the nagado-daiko (miya daiko) is also a popular instrument in modern kumi-daiko (taiko ensemble) performances.

Sound:
The sound of a miya daiko is characterized by its deep, low pitch, described as 'DON'.
