Midnight Pieces for Vibraphone: each
Composer: Lesnik I

This three-movement work for solo vibraphone by Croatian composer Igor Lesnik begins with a slow rubato movement ("First Toy") that features a nice melody in a Impressionistic setting. The second movement ("The Look of The Year") is a fast Latin work that employs an independent left hand salsa bass line set against an Eastern European-inspired melody. The third movement ("Waltz for Midnight") is a slow, expressive piece with lush harmonies. The composer's European classical music roots are clearly evident in this work, but his performance notes suggest that many sections may be improvised (where chord symbols are provided), and that jazz phrasing should be kept in mind when performing the piece. Four-mallet and polyrhythmic independence (2:3, 3:2, and some quintuplets) are required to successful negotiate this piece. This would be an excellent work for a college or professional recital.
