Drums & Percussion: Drumkit - Congas - Marimba: each
Composer: Talati Ian

Learning an instrument can be intimidating and daunting, and there should be an easier way to get a student to start learning how to play straight away, and have something to take that they can understand. The author, Ian Talati, believes when students start lessons, they need to be made to feel as comfortable as possible, and encourage and inspired to want to go further and learn more.

This book is divided into six sections covering mainly drum kit, hand percussion and some tuned percussion. With a focus on techniques, patterns and styles, a beginning percussionist will be taught all of the main beats, fills and styles that a drum kit player and hand percussionist would need to play at gigs should know as standard repertoire, including:

  • * Rock, funk, jazz, and grunge drumkit
  • * Afro-Cuban, Latin, African and Greek styles of hand percussion.

In the tuned percussion section, there are pictures for 2 and 4 mallet technique, and timpani technique.

Students should be encouraged to become natural music readers, so the first part of this book is written in both tablature and standard music notation. The end of the book included some basic theory knowledge as well as some common scales to practice.  It is essential to good musicianship to gain further theoretical knowledge as students progress through their studies.
There is also information on key signatures, general instrument tuning and drumkit tuning.
