Samba Batu & Samba Cada: each
Composer: Amandi E

The preliminary exercises include all the rhythms that occur in the two pieces. Only after having worked his/her way through the exercises, the student should study the pieces gradually, from one figure to the next. Samba Batu and Samba Cada are just "main themes" giving a larger group an opportunity to play samba. Of course, they can be played as notated, but the conductor can also use all of the twelve parts from both sambas either in Samba Batu or Samba Cada. In this case, the first part from Samba Cada is added to the first part of Samba Batu, the second to the second, and so forth. Thus, twelve different forms of samba with up to twelve parts can be realized, provided that enough players and instruments are available. The pieces may also be interpreted using other instruments than those indicated here, as long as they are typical of samba music. The musicians can, and in fact should use these instruments to add new rhythms of their own, either to complement or replace the original rhythm. Instrumentation also includes a small hand drum and agogo bells.
