Rhythm Strip: each Composer: Masson Askell
In this duet for two snare drummers, Player I uses a piccolo snare drum and player II performs on both orchestral snare drum and field drum. Some non-traditional notation is used to indicate effects such as playing on the rim, rimshots, clicking sticks together, etc. The hand-written music is oversized and comes with two complete scores.In the words of the composer, "`Rhythm Strip' is an Electrocardiogram, showing waves generated at each heartbeat of a person, and the piece is based on some of these wave-patterns." Indeed, the work incorporates repetitive rhythmic patterns, but there is also much rhythmic variation, and a good mixture of unison passages with sections of contrasting rhythms. Each player is also given a written solo section.
