Rain Spell: each
Composer: Takemitsu Toru

Rain Spell was composed in 1982 for the Sound-Space Ark, and dedicated to Hiroshi Koizumi, Yoshiaki Suzuki, Ayako Shinozaki, Aki Takahashi, and Yasunori Yamaguchi. It employs many interesting extended techniques in the instruments: multi-phonic sonorities, harmonics, and timbral trills in the two woodwinds; bowed vibraphone; muted and pizzicato on the strings of the piano; and quarter-tone tunings for some of the harp strings (perhaps recalling the sounds of the Koto). Rain Spell is an exquisite miniature textural study, conjuring deft washes of color from a handful of instruments, not unlike the delicate traceries of a Japanese watercolor.
