The House of Ice: each Composer: Shchedrin Rodion
A russian fairy tale. This is a four mallet solo that requires a 4 octave marimba. The piece begins with a slow, one- handed roll in the left hand with single-note patterns in the right. The next Allegro section features quintuplet patterns. After a brief return to the first tempo, the solo returns to an Allegro with thirty- second notes. This leads to a Presto in which some improvisation is encouraged. There is even a speaking part during a Lento interlude. This is a creative solo with ample opportunity for expression.
